Purpose: to evaluate the quality of life in voice individuals submitted to thyroidectomy prior to the procedure. Methods: the study included female patients of a reference hospital referred for thyroid or gallstone surgery. Subjects were divided into: Study Group -30 women (mean 44.26 years) referred for partial or total thyroidectomy surgery; Control Group -30 women (mean 45.3 years), forwarded to gallstone surgery. The participants answered a screening questionnaire and Voice-Related Quality of Life. Data were statistically analyzed by the Fisher Two Tailed Test, Student's T Test and Pearson correlation coefficient, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results: there was a higher incidence of vocal complaints (48,3%), and lower scores for quality of life in voice in all areas in the study group than in the control group. In the exclusive analysis to the study group, it was observed that the physical domain was the most affected, with difference to the social-emotional domain (p=0,002), there is still strong positive correlation between the scores of the two domains (r=0,047; p=<0,001). Conclusion: it is concluded that the group of women with thyroid diseases pre-thyroidectomy has a negative impact on quality of life in voice, especially when it comes to the physical domain, and as the physical affections related to voice happen, there are influences on the social-emotional domain. Objective(s)The objective of this study is to compare treatment outcomes for vocal fold polyps (VFPs) between operating room microlaryngoscopy and office‐based photoangiolysis with the potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser.MethodsProspective nonrandomized cohort study of patients with VFPs undergoing microlaryngoscopy (“OR group”) or KTP laser photoangiolysis (“KTP group”). Voice outcomes (patient‐reported outcome measures [Voice Handicap Index‐10 (VHI‐10) and Singing VHI‐10 (SVHI‐10)], auditory‐perceptual measures [Consensus Auditory‐Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE‐V)], videostroboscopic characteristics [Voice‐Vibratory Assessment of Laryngeal Imaging (VALI)], and acoustic and aerodynamic measures) were performed at baseline and regular intervals after intervention.ResultsForty‐four subjects (17 OR group, 27 KTP group) with VFPs were enrolled. Mean VHI‐10 significantly improved from baseline to each follow‐up interval in both groups, except for the 1–2‐week interval in the OR group. Mean SVHI‐10 improved for both groups at some intervals. Growth curve models and time‐to‐event analyses for patient‐reported outcomes did not differ between groups. There were significant improvements in all categories of auditory‐perceptual voice quality and some categories of videostroboscopic characteristics in both groups. No significant trends were identified in acoustic and aerodynamic measures. Improvements in most outcomes did not significantly differ between groups or based on polyp size. There were no major complications.ConclusionsSignificant improvements in patient‐reported voice outcomes measures, auditory‐perceptual voice evaluation, and videostroboscopic characteristics occur following surgical treatment of vocal fold polyps with either microlaryngoscopy or office‐based KTP laser. Voice quality preservation in thyroid surgery with neuromonitoring

PurposeVoice problems are common after thyroidectomy. The aim of this study was to assess the voice related quality of life after thyroidectomy with neuromonitoring. The sociodemographic and treatment factors influencing the quality of voice after the operation were investigated.MethodsA total of 40 patients after thyroidectomy with neuromonitoring were enrolled into the study. The voice outcome was analyzed pre and postoperatively by two validated self-assessment questionnaires: Voice Handicap Index and Voice-Related Quality of Life survey.ResultsAll external branches of the superior laryngeal nerve were identified during the operation. There were no recurrent laryngeal nerve palsies. The mean total VHIs before and after thyroid operation were 1.2 [SD 2.564] and 2.8 [SD 6.944], respectively (p = 0.5). Preoperatively, the mean overall score for the V-RQOL was 99.6; postoperatively 98.7 (p = 0.05). A strong correlation between the V-score of the V-RQOL and O-score of the VHI before and after thyroidectomy was observed (both p < 0.001).There was no correlation between V-RQOL or VHI and sex, the kind of thyroid operations, diagnosis, thyroid function, the mean volume of the goitre, the presence of retrosternal position and the extent of thyroid operations (p > 0.05). A small correlation between the mean age of the patients and postoperative O-Score of the VHI (p = 0.007650) and between the mean age and postoperative V-Score for the V-RQOL (p = 0.00648) was observed.ConclusionsThe use of neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery is beneficial for patients to improve voice quality. The identification and preservation of EBSLNs is crucial to eliminate altered voice after thyroidectomy.
