Voltammetric procedure for the determination of oleanolic and ursolic acids in plant extracts

Abstract: In this work, a novel method based on square wave voltammetric determination of pentacyclic triterpenes (oleanolic and ursolic acids, OA and UA) at an unmodified glassy carbon electrode in plant material after chromatographic separation was developed.

“…Despite the fact that the chemistry of Sambuci flos is well documented there is little information about triterpenoids content. Earlier studies referred to the flower of Sambucus nigra as a source of ursolic and oleanolic acid determined by GC and HPLC analysis [15][16][17]. Therefore, by comparison our current results with literature data, we may conclude that flowers are a rich source of these biologically active compounds (~ 1.4 %).…”

“…The lipid soluble extract of V. album showed the presence of oleanolic acid, β-amyrin acetate, βamyrinacetate, lupeol, lupeol acetate, betulinic acid, and ursolic acid. 44,45 A mixture of phytosterols including -sitosterol and stigmasterol and their esters were also identified. 46,47 Moreover, other lipophilic compounds specially saturated fatty acids palmitic, arachidic, lignoceric, behenic, and cerotic acids and the unsaturated oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids were presented in the extract of Turkey V. album.…”

“…Since flavonoids are chromophore-bearing compounds, they can therefore be detected by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, triterpenes, especially pentacyclic triterpenes, lack chromophores, thus give a low-intensity response or cannot be observed under UV [ 27 , 28 , 29 ]. Evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) possesses a non-discriminative ability for all sorts of compounds and it is cost-effective compared to the other universal detectors such as gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS).…”
