Voltammetric study of the antioxidant properties of catalase and superoxide dismutase

Abstract: The antioxidant properties of catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) have been studied by voltammetry. The effect of pH on the antioxidant properties of catalase and SOD has been evaluated. It is established that the antioxidant activity of both enzymes is maximum at pH 6.86. Mechanisms of the interaction of enzymes with reactive oxygen species are considered. Antioxidant activity criterion (IC 50 ) for SOD and some copper complexes have been estimated by voltammetry and spectrophotometry.

“…The lower the concentration required for 50% increase or inhibition of the considered model signal, the more active the antioxidant. Korotkova et al [170] relied on the modifications in the oxygen electro-reduction current in the presence of antioxidants, as criteria to determine IC 50 by voltammetry. Catalase and superoxide dismutase yielded an increase of the oxygen electro-reduction current, when compared to the signal obtained in supported electrolyte.…”

“…Catalase and superoxide dismutase yielded an increase of the oxygen electro-reduction current, when compared to the signal obtained in supported electrolyte. Superoxide dismutase presented an IC 50 value of 1.08 µM [170]. Wei et al evaluated IC 50 , as the antioxidant amount that diminishes the oxidation peak of superoxide by 50%.…”
