Volume holographic spatial mode demultiplexer with a dual-wavelength method

Abstract: Volume holographic demultiplexers (VHDMs) provide spatial mode demultiplexing using simple optical systems. However, applying VHDM to practical optical communication systems is difficult, as typical holographic media have no sensitivity in the infrared region, which includes optical transmission bands. In this paper, we propose a VHDM scheme combined with a dual-wavelength method (DWM). Using the DWM, VHDMs are able to perform mode demultiplexing in the optical transmission bands. We experimentally demonstrate… Show more

“…Since HOEs are holograms whose purpose is to replicate the function of optical components such as mirrors, lenses, etc., they have great potential to find application as functional optical films and coatings, but to do so they must be relatively low cost to produce. Volume HOEs have been developed for a broad range of applications including data storage (1),( 2),(3) optical communication(4), ( 5), ( 6), (7), (8) and others (9), (10) but two of the most active research areas in recent years have been augmented reality displays and solar concentrators.…”

“…Its simple composition supports its connection with a laser array, enabling the realization of a compact mode-MUX source. A wideband VH MUX/DeMUX can be achieved by reducing the interference angle between the writing and reference beams in the recording process [27]; however, such a small interference angle is difficult to realize in the actual setup of the recording process. In the general wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and MDM transmitter, a WDM coupler is followed by a mode-MUX; therefore, the VH might have wavelength-dependent characteristics that do not match those required for WDM/MDM transmission.…”

“…Therefore, we must use lasers with different wavelengths, that is, a visible laser and a communication band laser for the recording and reading processes. The method that uses different wavelengths for the processes is called the dual-wavelength method (DWM) [27]. We formed a communication band mode-DeMUX using VHs developed using the DWM.…”
