Volume measurements in nuclear medicine gated SPECT and 4D echocardiography: validation using a dynamic cardiac phantom

Abstract: The agreement between gated SPECT (after correction) and 4D echocardiography confirmed the relevance of the comparisons. This study was an initial step before conducting clinical trials to compare exhaustively left ventricular volumes obtained with the two modalities.

“…30–33 Overall, the RT3DE method has improved image quality from the standard 2D images and measured cardiac function with superior diagnostic accuracy in predicting LV mass, systolic function, along with LV and RV volume when compared with 2DE. The results from the regional wall motion abnormalities need to be verified in larger studies.…”

“…Examinations were carried out on the same patient using successively two medical imaging modalities within a short period of time, in order to assume the LV deformations to be reproducible and hence medical comparisons applicable. The first sequence is composed of eight LV surfaces obtained after automatic segmentation from nuclear medicine imaging (NMI), known to be a -gold standard‖ examination for cardiac observation (Figure 10 with a pacemaker (Debrun et al, 1999) and on a mechanical phantom (Debrun et al, 2005), in order to ensure heart beat regularity and volume deformation reproducibility. However, the lack of registration does not allow local comparisons, since the two surface absolute orientations are not known.…”

Debrun et al (14) have utilized a dynamic cardiac phantom as a reference in the comparison and validation of volume measurements in gated-SPECT and 4D echocardiography. Lee et al (15) , utilizing a Korean adult voxel phantom, developed a study to calculate the specific absorbed fraction for estimating internal organ dose, and compared their results with data obtained with an adult phantom (Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Oak Ridge, USA).…”
