Volumetric properties of aqueous solutions of alcohols and diols at 25 °C

Abstract: Partial molar volumes at infinite dilution, c, and pairwise contributions to the volume, v,, , are computed from density measurements of aqueous solutions of some polyhydroxylated compounds. A modified group-additivity approach is proposed to evaluate with precision the q values of positional isomeric compounds, when the c values of the first members of a few homologous series are known. The v, , values are correlated to the corresponding q values, confirming a previous hypothesis (C. Cascella, G. Castronuovo,… Show more

“…The agreement is somewhat less satisfactory for results given by DiPaola and Belleau, (7) whose V φ values for 12PD are higher than ours by about 4.5 cm 3 · mol −1 . Their results are also not consistent with those of Wurzburger et al (10) and Terasawa et al (13) We note that others (3,15) have stated that the contribution of a methylene group to V o 2 for hydrocarbons, 1-alkanols or alkanediols should be about 16.0 cm 3 · mol −1 , which is consistent with the difference between our results for ED and those for 12PD and 13PD.…”

“…The agreement between our values and those taken from the literature is very satisfactory. Larger deviations are found for data reported by Nakanishi et al [10] and Wurzburger et al [11]. Table 2 presents a comparison of our partial molar volumes at T = 298 K and low pressure with selected data (T = 298.15 K, p = 0.1 MPa) taken from the literature.…”
