Volumetric study of sphenoid sinuses: anatomical analysis in helical computed tomography

Abstract: According to the applied methodology, it was found that the volume of the sphenoid sinus was influenced by neither age nor gender (P > 0.005). There was difference in the volumes of sphenoid sinus on the right and left sides and in the anatomical classification.

“…9 Methods of 3-D reconstruction have also been used to determine the volume of the sphenoid sinus, making it possible to categorize and improve anatomic knowledge of this anatomic structure, which has been regarded as the most inaccessible part of the face. 14 With regard to cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), a 2014 study reported a much higher sensitivity for cortical bone invasion and a better negative predictive value of CBCT compared with regular CT scan. 15 In this report, the authors strongly emphasized that individualized segmentation and virtual surgical planning should be performed for each patient specifically.…”

“…Low levels of oral health knowledge will hinder the sound understanding of oral health care, and result in a poor oral health outcome [27]. The previous review studies reported that daily use of fluoridated toothpaste had a significant caries-preventive effect in children [12,28,29]. The oral health situation would be enhanced by a combination of the S-FMR program together with provision of oral health education for further impressive results.…”

“…Only 14.7% of the Sri Lankan population get the desired level of fluoride concentration of around 1mg/L through natural drinking water supplies [11]. The evidence-based preventive methods such as topical fluoride applications, fluoride mouth rinsing, diet modifications and good oral hygiene practices are widely used for public caries prevention [2,12]. Daily use of fluoride toothpaste and school-based fluoride mouth rinse programs are recommended to control dental caries in children and adolescents, especially for communities in low fluoridated areas [13].…”

“…Three-dimensional reconstruction was performed because it is a useful and precise method for assessing the volume and morphological changes in the target structures [10, 11]. The aim of the present report is to describe a case of sialolithiasis and the 3D visualisation of the salivary calculus by using 3D reconstruction software, thus enabling a better understanding of the morphology of the lesion and its proximity to adjacent tissues, including ideal measurements for optimising the surgical access.…”
