“…Our findings are in line with expectations around new social movement research – on states that are not advanced industrialized democracies – that emphasizes the potential for homophobic mobilization (Weiss & Bosia, 2013). The findings pertaining to electoral behaviour may also be explained by variation in the supply of politicians that align with voters’ preferences in more tolerant states (Magni & Reynolds, 2021; Reynolds, 2013). Tolerant individuals in Persecuting states may have fewer options to vote for candidates who reflect their preferences, thus exiting from electoral politics to the streets.…”
