Vulnerability Assessment of Forest Fringe Villages of Madhya Pradesh, India for Planning Adaptation Strategies

Abstract: This study aims to assess the climate change vulnerability of forest fringe villages of Madhya Pradesh, India, and to identify the major drivers of vulnerability, which could help to develop effective adaptation strategies. A total of 325 households spread in 29 villages of Hoshangabad, and Mandla districts were chosen for primary data collection during the summer of 2015. The selection of villages and households was carried out through stratified random sampling and systematic random sampling, respectively. T… Show more

“…It is assumed that households who are only depending on forest-based energy for cooking and lighting purpose are more sensitive to climate extremes. The same result has been reported by Yadava and Sinha (2020), revealing that access to energy sources transforms households’ livelihood from traditional to modern which ultimately leads to an enhanced coping capacity of households when faced with climate extremes.…”

“…In addition, there are many types of research methods; with the development of research, the research methods on vulnerability and the resilience of the village ecosystem are more complex and diversified. These include analytic hierarchy process [ 49 ], entropy method [ 50 ] and principal component analysis [ 51 ]. Each of these research methods has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the practicability and defects of the evaluation methods have a greater impact on the evaluation results.…”

“…Mountains are especially important, having a significant influence on the characteristics of a settlement, such as production methods and factor safety [53][54][55]. Rivers and lakes provide essential resources such as drinking water and transportation [56,57], while forests offer materials for settlement development and maintain comfortable microclimates [58]. The distribution of agricultural land dictates the productive and social properties of a settlement [59,60], and vegetation enhances soil quality, water conservation, and disaster prevention [61].…”
