The Mexican Central Highlands have been a major cluster for human settlement since pre-Hispanic times and its soils provide much of the food for modern Mexico. Rainfed cultivation yielded and still yields most of the agricultural products. However, pre-Hispanic rainfed cultivation has been less documented than other practices. Moreover, textual and ethnographic records, mostly postdating the deep modifications made by the Spanish conquerors, have long been prevalent in studies on pre-Hispanic farming and have tended to bias our conception of the latter. Archaeology provides new key information but struggles to address rainfed techniques, which leave few remains behind in some landscapes. To that regard, spatial approaches considering geoecological parameters are helpful. Furthermore, remote sensing techniques and airborne laser scanning (LiDAR), above all, offer increasing potential for feature detection and provides new ways to address fossilized landscapes at both archaeological and environmental levels. This paper offers new insights on pre-Hispanic rainfed cultivation through an interdisciplinary approach. It focuses on archaeological settlements on malpaís landforms (young and rugged lava flows) in the Malpaís de Zacapu, in western Mexico. There, a method combining fieldwork and remote sensing in archaeology and soil science was developed to reassess pre-Hispanic farming. After presenting the method and this study's main results, I discuss the latter in light of examples of ethnohistorical and ethnographical uses of malpaís landforms. They suggest that widespread conceptions about agricultural soils of the Mexican Central Highlands held by external observers differ from Indigenous and local farmers' notions, which seem partly inherited from pre-Hispanic times.

The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of physical and social vulnerability factors due to the eruption of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta. Furthermore, this study identifies the significance of physical and social vulnerability to the achievement of the SDGs in Yogyakarta. The achievement of SDGs number 11 is supported by indicators of the percentage of the number of dead or missing victims to the total number of disaster events, disaster risk index, regional resilience index, number of resilient villages/kelurahan that have been formed, integrated early warning system, and availability of contingency plans. The achievement of SDGs number 13 is further explained using a simple indicator, namely greenhouse gas emissions. In this case, the research contribution is expected to add an indicator explaining the achievement of SDGs number 13 in addition to climate change. This study uses IRBI (Indonesian Disaster Risk Index) data to indicate the achievement of disaster risk reduction in the research area. The achievement of the SDGs, which has increased every year, certainly has positive implications for handling vulnerable groups. The location of this research study is the District of Turi. Turi sub-district is important to be studied considering the current conditions and potential future exposure to the eruption of Mount Merapi. This study utilizes the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique to determine the weight of the indicators used in vulnerability modeling. The research data were tested using statistical analysis of data normality, probabilistic Poison, and the two-way ANOVA effect test. The results showed that there was no influence of the variables of physical vulnerability and social vulnerability on the existing SDGs. The conclusion of the research on the effect of physical and social vulnerability factors on the eruption of Mount Merapi Volcano shows that there is no influence of the value of physical and social vulnerability in Turi District on the achievement of SDGs in the form of the DIY Disaster Risk Index

Dieng volcanic highland, where located in Wonosobo and Banjarnegara regencies, has a unique frost phenomenon that usually occurs in the dry season (July, August, and September). This phenomenon may attract tourism, but it has caused losses to farmers due to crop damage. Information regarding frost prediction is needed in order to minimize the negative impact of this extreme event. This study evaluates the potential use of the Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) forecast dataset for frost prediction, with a focus on two areas where frost usually occurs, i.e. the Arjuna Temple and Sikunir Hill. Daily minimum air temperature data used to predict frost events was from the outputs of the ECMWF model, which is one of the models contributed in the Subseasonal to Seasonal prediction project (S2S). The minimum air temperature observation data from the Banjarnegara station was used in conjunction with the Digital Elevation Model Nasional (DEMNAS) data to generate spatial data based on the lapse rate function. This spatial data was used as a reference to downscale the ECMWF S2S data using the bias correction approach. The results of this study indicated that the bias-corrected data of the ECMWF S2S forecast was able to show the spatial pattern of minimum air temperature from observations, especially during frost events. The S2S prediction represented by the bias-corrected ECMWF model has the potential for providing early warning of frost events in Dieng, with a lead time of more than one month before the event.
