“…The common sites of tumor implantation in this model include the leg muscle, liver, and auricles [15] , [16] , [17] . Studies have also established VX2 tumors in the buccal mucosa, larynx, and esophagus [18] , [19] , [20] . To mimic thick neck masses seen in humans, we developed an orthotopic neck tumor model by surgically implanting tumor tissue into the sternohyoid muscle of rabbits.…”

“…All animal experiments were completed following a protocol approved by the Animal Care Committee of University Health Network, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with measures to minimize pain and discomfort. To generate the head and neck tumor model, ten male New Zealand white rabbits (Charles River, Wilmington, Massachusetts) weighing 2.5-3.0 kg were anesthetized with isoflurane and subsequently injected with 300 μL of a high-density cell suspension (5 x 10 6 /mL) of VX2 squamous cell carcinoma into one cheek muscle (buccinator) [14]. Two weeks after VX2 cell injection all ten animals developed tumor in the cheek and cervical lymph node metastases.…”
