Grid band-pass filters for 300-, 450-, 600-, and 750-GHz central frequencies are designed and manufactured. Copper and aluminum foil and foil-clad fluoroplastic filters were made by chemical and ionic etching methods, and an aluminum film sputtered on a kapton film was formed by the lift-off lithography method. A gold layer was electrolytically applied on copper grid filters. Characteristics of the filters were measured in the millimeter, submillimeter, and infrared (IR) ranges. Foil filters demonstrate better characteristics at lower frequencies, while filters with sputtered films have better characteristics at upper frequencies. The smallest transmission loss was 0.13 dB. For a stage consisting of four filters, this loss was 0.9 dB. The IR radiation attenuation in a 2.5-to 25-µ m wavelength region was no less than 11 dB per filter.

Measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation results. The relatively small amount of mismatch between the two patterns is mostly attributed to constructive imperfections and edge effects. Essentially, the antenna demonstrates predictable radiation characteristics and verifies the effectiveness of the proposed layout. CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE WORKIn this paper, a novel concept is introduced: the use of conductive fluid as structural element in order to extend the features of a single monopole antenna. It is shown that by controlling the level of the fluid round the driven element it is possible to control the resonant frequency of the antenna. This capability enables both the operation at different frequencies and at the same time the filtering of interference and the background noise. Additionally, by controlling the heights of the parasitic elements it is possible to control the radiation pattern of the antenna. In essence, this last capability targets at the creation of notch zones concerning the radiation of the antenna, rather than increasing the gain of it. This characteristic is particularly useful in applications where multiple wireless links coexist and the interferences between them decrease the SNIR (signal-to-noise-andinterference-ratio). Future work regarding this topic includes the optimization of the antenna's design parameters (e.g., the dimensions and the materials used) as well as the research for different variations of the antenna layout in an attempt to achieve better emission characteristics. ABSTRACT: Periodic structures are widely used in order to provide different behavior on devices that operate in high frequencies. Some of them, are capable to change the constitutive parameters e and m, so that, the incident wave can assume a different behavior. Therefore, in this work, the tripole array is presented as an alternative tool to improve the performance of microwave systems, in terms of bandwidth, gain and resonance frequency. The equivalent circuit method in conjunction with the full-wave simulation method was used in order to characterize the tripole array topology, for normal and oblique incidence. Measurements and simulated results are compared.

Specifications of the substrates are among the most important and problematic parameters that still do not have proper models in the design procedures of metasurfaces. In this paper, a new fast and exact algorithm based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) is presented, which makes it possible to design frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) on various kinds of standard substrates. Also for the first time, designing FSSs on uniaxial anisotropic substrates can be easily done in short time and without any optimization algorithms. During this paper, first equivalent geometry approach (EGA) is demonstrated as a new method of preparation the ANNs. Then EGA is used to train geometry transformation ANNs. The advantage of this approach is to reduce the size of training datasets by about 98% and prevent from superfluous simulations. Hence, the time needed for training of the networks is much less than before. Numerical results are used to show that the required time for developing FSSs is <200 ms on average, and errors are <2%. For the final validation, a prototype sample of FSS is fabricated on the RO4003 substrate with 20 mil thickness. Both analytical and experimental results confirm the correctness of the predicted values.
