Abstract: The electromechanical and -physiological effects of beauvericin were studied in isolated smooth and heart muscle preparations of the guinea pig. Beauvericin concentration-dependently decreased the force of contraction in precontracted (60 mM KCl) terminal ilea with an IC50 of 0.86 microM, and in electrically stimulated (1 Hz) papillary muscles with an IC50 of 18 microM. This negative inotropic effect in papillary muscles was antagonised in a non-competitive way by increased extracellular calcium concentrations… Show more

“…The cyclic hexadepsipeptides beauvericin (BEA) and enniatins are Fusarium secondary metabolites, which are less frequently investigated by routine methods. Beauvericin is toxic to several vertebrate and invertebrate cell cultures, inducing apoptosis, and is known to be a very potent channel-forming molecule inducing pores in biological membranes [35]. Enniatins are known for their phytotoxic and antimicrobial activity.…”

“…Still, both FA [43], [44] and BEA [15], [17], [45] have resulted in pathological disorders in experimental animals and human cell lines. For this reason, it is important to determine the extent to which humans and animals are exposed to toxins produced by Foc in banana plants.…”

“…This suggests that a man of 50 kg will have to consume 10 5 kg bananas contaminated with FA at a concentration of 12.13–52.34 ng/g to be killed. Although the toxicity of FA may increase when combined with other mycotoxins [46], the BEA content in fruit of 5.66–40.53 pg/g was also low enough to be considered safe for human consumption [15], [43]. Furthermore, there has never been a report of intoxication of humans due to banana consumption.…”

“…In comparison to levcromakalim, both compounds show decreased vasorelaxant activity by a factor of two [13]. The geometries of these substances were minimized by ab initio calculations (HF/3± 21 G) and compared with different conformations of levcromakalim.…”
