Wachstumsreaktionen verschiedener Provenienzen der Weißtanne (Abies alba Mill.) nach winterlicher SOj‐Begasung

Abstract: Growth patterns of different Abies alba (Mill.) provenances after SO2-fumigation during the previous winter. Height and diameter growth, time of flushing and needle cast were studied in different Abies alba provenances one year after SO2 exposure. Provenance specific reduction in growth and needle cast could be demonstrated.

“…Even though the results of a number of ecophysiological experiments (provenance variation and response to frost, SO2, water stress as well as root regeneration and gas exchange properties) are in accordance with the hypothesis (Larsen, 1986b;Larsen & Friedrich, 1988;Meki~, 1988;Quian, 1989), confirmation through studies on patterns of genetic variation is pending. The aim of the present work is therefore to verify the above hypothesis by estimating the levels of genetic variation within fir populations using enzyme polymorphisms whose mode of inheritance is known.…”

“…Besides natural factors, for example water stress (Davis and Mansfield 1983), anthropogenic air pollutants (SO2, photooxidants) are frequently discussed as factors causing damage to silver fir (Larsen 1986;Larsen and Friedrich 1988). Disturbances in the hormonal balance of affected trees can lead to premature senescence and loss of needles.…”
