“…With regard to gender disparities, the crisis provoked a generalized levelling down of the female/male gaps in Europe (European Commission, ). This did not correspond to a true progress in gender equality; it was the result of a prevailing trend of slowing down of wages growth rates (O'Farrell, ) and of increasing shares of workers who experienced wage declines (ILO, ), proportionally more widespread among male employment. Two factors seem to have prevented an aggravation of gender inequalities.…”

“…When an organization engages in a dismissal process, its intention is to permanently reduce the size of its workforce (e.g., downsizing), which may not be necessarily associated with low job performance. Especially after 2010, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission have been pressuring some southern Euro zone countries (e.g., Greece, Spain, and Portugal) to adopt strict austerity measures, thus giving rise to high unemployment levels and emphasizing the adoption of "negative" HR practices (O'Farrell, 2010).…”

“…Moreover, we address this issue in the framework of the economic crisis that brought about a new set of challenges to the labour market, the decline in real wages being one of its most socially negative effects. The crisis may have mixed effects on the wages (O'Farrell, 2010): redundancies of the lower paid workers tend to create a statistical effect of growth in the average wage, even in the absence of real wage increases, but the decreased economic activity reduces the demand for labour, therefore putting downward pressure on wages. Prior to the recent economic crisis, Romania experienced a period of sustained and relatively rapid economic growth that, combined with workforce shortages in some sectors, underpinned signifi cant increases in wages, in particular after the accession to the EU, and fostered the catch-up of the poorer regions.…”
