Waist Circumference and Waist-to-Hip Ratio Are Related to Gestational Glucose Tolerance

Abstract: Central fat distribution measured in pregnancy is an independent predictor of gestational glucose intolerance. This finding supports the concept that NIDDM and gestational diabetes are parts of the same disease, differing basically in their moment of detection. The usefulness of these anthropometric measurements in identifying pregnant women at high risk of having gestational glucose intolerance merits further investigation.

“…Waist measurement is influenced by uterine volume in late pregnancy. This influence appears to become important when fundal height reaches 27cm 17 , which corresponds, in our sample, to the median fundal height at 28 weeks of gestation. Since our objective was to find a good predictor of disease earlier, between 20-28 weeks, a time when risk assessment for gestational diabetes is usually undertaken, we feel that our waist measurements were scarcely influenced and are applicable during this relevant clinical period of gestation.…”

“…A Brazilian study in 1997 by Branchtein and colleagues 129 found that waist-to-hip ratio and waist circumference were associated with glucose intolerance. The authors measured these at 21-28 weeks and concluded that central fat distribution predicts IGT.…”

“…Evidên-cias epidemiológicas sugerem, também, que o excesso de peso pré-gestacional (Nucci et al, 2001), obesidade abdominal (Branchtein et al, 1997) e ganho de peso excessivo (Seligman et al, 2006;Kac & Velásquez-Meléndez, 2005) estariam relacionados a um maior risco de complicações, como hemorragia materna, distúrbios hipertensivos, diabetes gestacional e macrossomia fetal.…”
