Waist:height ratio: a superior index in estimating cardiovascular risks in Turkish adults

Abstract: Objective: To determine the best anthropometric measurement among waist: height ratio (WHtR), BMI, waist:hip ratio (WHR) and waist circumference (WC) associated with high CHD risk in adults and to define the optimal cut-off point for WHtR. Design: Population-based cross-sectional study. Setting: Balcova, Izmir, Turkey. Subjects: Individuals (n 10 878) who participated in the baseline survey of the Heart of Balcova Project. For each participant, 10-year coronary event risk (Framingham risk score) was calculated… Show more

“…Some studies reported that BMI or WC was the best predictor of incident hypertension [11,13,14,24]. While others declared that WHTR was superior to predict the incidence of hypertension [6,25,26]. In the present study, BMI and WC, as the classical general and abdominal obesity indicators, were superior to predict the development of hypertension in Chinese men and women, which was consistent with previous studies [5,27,28].…”

“…911 Reports employing the SADHtR have been infrequent, 17,18 but among Finnish adults (ages ≥30 years) the population-based distribution of SADHtR has been described from a national survey conducted in 2000–2001. 49 The Finnish distributions of SADHtR resembled the US distributions in 2011–2012, reported here in Table 2.…”

“…The waist circumference has been widely employed as a proxy measure of abdominal adipose tissue, 7,8 although the waist circumference/height ratio (WHtR) may represent an anthropometric improvement because it roughly controls for variation in adult stature. 911 Neither waist circumference nor WHtR, however, distinguishes between adipose tissue accumulated within, as opposed to outside, the visceral compartment.…”

“…Various studies have found similar cut-off points for WHtR for increased cardiometabolic risk, comparing different populations 16,17,18 , as well as men and women, independently of age bracket 19,20 . In fact, a WHtR cutoff of 0.5 for has been proposed as a predictor of cardiometabolic risk according to other anthropometric indices, e.g.…”
