Wastewater Disinfection by Peracetic Acid: Assessment of Models for Tracking Residual Measurements and Inactivation

Abstract: With its potential for low (if any) disinfection byproduct formation and easy retrofit for chlorine contactors, peracetic acid (PAA) or use of PAA in combination with other disinfectant technologies may be an attractive alternative to chlorine-based disinfection. Examples of systems that might benefit from use of PAA are water reuse schemes or plants discharging to sensitive receiving water bodies. Though PAA is in use in numerous wastewater treatment plants in Europe, its chemical kinetics, microbial inactiva… Show more

“…In our case, our objective was to illustrate a new modeling methodology for simulating wastewater disinfection processes under kinetic uncertainty. We decided to use the 13 kinetic experiments published by Santoro et al 9 in which the E. coli inactivation and the PAA decay kinetics in a secondary settled wastewater effluent affected by wastewater quality variability were simultaneously measured. The assumption that 13 kinetic experiments were quantitatively sufficient was also verified by checking the sensitivity of the correlation matrix against the number of kinetic experiments considered.…”

“…Alternatively, more sophisticated models could be applied which would account for changes in both C and N 0 /N over time (Santoro et al 2007). Such data were not available for this study, and it would be advisable to collect them in future work with PFA.…”

“…This is true when using UV radiation, as well as doi: 10.2166/wst.2009.761 oxidizing chemicals such as PAA. PAA is successful only at relatively high doses (2 -5 mg/L, depending on the target; Santoro et al 2007). This renders its economics problematic in many cases.…”
