Wastewater Management Efficiency and Determinant Factors in the Chinese Industrial Sector from 2004 to 2014

Abstract: This study analyzes industrial wastewater management efficiency using a Chinese provincial dataset from 2004 to 2014. The weighted Russell directional distance model is used to evaluate the efficiency of management practices. Determinants analysis was conducted based on governmental policy, pollution abatement, and market factors to identify the main drivers of industrial wastewater management efficiency in China. The results indicate that the wastewater management efficiency improved in the eastern and centra… Show more

“…In this context, the government promoted research and development activities involving air pollutant abatement technologies in the industrial sector and exhaust emission controls for automobiles. In addition to air pollutant problems, the Chinese government allocated a large budget for water quality improvements (Fujii and Managi, 2017). These allocations increased the incentive to develop water pollution abatement technologies for future environmental markets based on expanded governmental budgets.…”

“…Additionally, Yang and Li [36] calculated the total factor efficiency of wastewater control in different industrial sectors in China between 2003 and 2014. Fujii and Managi [37] used the weighted Russell directional distance model to evaluate the efficiency of industrial wastewater management in China between 2004 and 2014. Also using the DEA model, Li et al [38] calculated green TFP for each industrial sector in China from 2001 to 2011 by estimating the Global Malmquist-Luenberger (GML) index using a Slacks-based Measure-Directional Distance Function (SBM-DDF).…”

“…When the pharmaceutical compounds reach water (wastewater, rivers, and oceans), they affect the aquatic species [18] and life itself. Among the most important pollution sources, the untreated hospital and industrial effluents [19,20] and the improper disposal of used or expired pharmaceuticals [21] can be mentioned.…”
