Watchmen: Scalable Cheat-Resistant Support for Distributed Multi-player Online Games

Abstract: Abstract-Multi-player online games are inherently distributed applications, and a wide range of distributed architectures have been proposed. However, only few successful commercial systems follow such approaches, even given their benefits, due to one main hurdle: the easiness with which cheaters can disrupt the game state computation and dissemination, perform illegal actions, or unduly gain access to sensitive information. The challenge is that any measures used to address cheating must meet the heavy scalab… Show more

“…Due to this, we perform the scalability of TRACE only with the RW model (we confirm that with other models the shape of the curve is identical). We are able to test our tool with a scenario having a number of cores in the range [1,32]. We obtain a good scalability of TRACE.…”

“…Event dissemination [6] reduces the number of communication channels on event senders to avoid overwhelming them in hotspot areas. Cheat prevention [7] is needed to achieve fairness without the arbitration from a central server. In these work, a desktop environment is assumed such that a client is always reliable in storage and connection.…”

“…However, cunning cheaters often employ techniques such as traffic obfuscation, encryption, and confusion to bypass detection. Some games, like "Fantasy Westward Journey" and "Dungeon & Fighter," intermittently present image captchas or numeric quizzes during gameplay to determine if users are present [18]. However, the effectiveness of these anti-cheat methods, based on pop-up event detection, has gradually diminished due to advancements in facial recognition and image processing technologies.…”
