Water bird habitat suitability analysis in an urban coastal wetland (case study: Lantebung mangrove ecotourism area)

Abstract: Water birds are significant wildlife in mangrove ecosystem. These aquatic birds have prominent roles for the integrity of the ecosystem. This research aimed to analyse water birds habitat suitability level at Lantebung Mangrove Ecotourism Area in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Geography Information System (GIS) and remote sensing approaches were employed in this study. Eight parameters were used for water bird habitat suitability assessment: land type, food class, water level, human disturbance, salinity… Show more

“…Protection of suitable areas, such as mudflats, mangroves and inactive fish ponds, is required. According to Pierce and Gawlik (2010) and Purify et al (2019), suitable areas where great varieties of food sources are available need to be protected from human disturbances. The choice of habitat by waterbirds in wetlands is strongly influenced by the availability of food sources and the ease of getting food according to the daily needs of each waterbird species foraging in a particular area.…”

“…On the local hand, the support of many stakeholders for habitat management and waterbirds conservation can be found in Indonesia. Purify et al (2019) suggest a map of a habitat suitability model for waterbirds in Lantebung Mangrove Ecotourism Area, Makassar city, to support habitat management in ecotourism areas waterbirds conservation. In this study, we have provided the simple mathematical equation model as the basis of habitat modeling for waterbirds.…”
