Water Deficit Transcriptomic Responses Differ in the Invasive Tamarix chinensis and T. ramosissima Established in the Southern and Northern United States

Abstract: Tamarix spp. (saltcedar) were introduced from Asia to the southern United States as windbreak and ornamental plants and have spread into natural areas. This study determined differential gene expression responses to water deficit (WD) in seedlings of T. chinensis and T. ramosissima from established invasive stands in New Mexico and Montana, respectively. A reference de novo transcriptome was developed using RNA sequences from WD and well-watered samples. Blast2GO analysis of the resulting 271,872 transcripts y… Show more

“…In terms of the cellular component category, the membrane is an important structure that indirectly or directly perceives stimulation to initiate signal trans-duction. For instance, several membrane genes are upregulated in Tamarix ramosissima in response to water deficiency [111].…”

“…Tamarixramosissima has long been regarded as a C 3 plant. However, all the core genes of C 4 carbon fixation were found not only in the two Tamarix species T. chinensis and T. ramosissima ( Swaminathan et al 2020 ), but also in another species in the same family: R. soongorica ( Shi et al 2013 ). Thus, Tamarix species have the molecular basis to utilize C 4 carbon fixation together with the C 3 pathway.…”

“…However, variations in the δ 13 C value caused by the influence of temperature, wind speed, precipitation and relative humidity (RH) ( Zhang et al 2018 ) also reflect conversion of water use strategy. In addition, a complete set of core genes of C 4 carbon fixation were found not only in the two Tamarix species, namely, T. ramosissima and Tamarix chinensis ( Swaminathan et al 2020 ), but also in Reaumuria soongorica , which belongs to the same family as Tamarix spp. according to transcriptome profiling data ( Shi et al 2013 ).…”

“…By understanding plant adaptive responses from a physiological, molecular, and genetic perspective, we can expand our knowledge of how leaves adapt to abiotic stress (Song et al, 2014). Such identi cation of physiological and genetic responses can be particularly helpful in crop management, especially when new cultivation systems are adopted (Swaminathan et al, 2020).…”
