Water Demand Scenarios for Electricity Generation at the Global and Regional Levels

Abstract: Electricity generation requires water. With the global demand for electricity expected to increase significantly in the coming decades, the water demand in the power sector is also expected to rise. However, due to the ongoing global energy transition, the future structure of the power supply—and hence future water demand for power generation—is subject to high levels of uncertainty, because the volume of water required for electricity generation varies significantly depending on both the generation technology… Show more

“…The freshwater consumption in the upstream sector in this region decreases in the PA but is compensated by an increase in consumption in electricity generation to reach around 10 km 3 in 2100. The results are comparable with the data found in [52].…”

“…(Independent Statistics & Analysis, 2021) Electricity and water are importance for sustaining and enhancing economic growth and social development. (Julia, et., al., 2020) The demand for the consumption of energy and water is increasing due to the fast growing of population, changing of consumer consumption habit, the high rate of commercial and industrial usage. In fact, the majority of water in the electricity sector is consumed for generating electricity (about 88%), especially for cooling processes at thermal power station plants, with thermal power station plants accounting for about 70% of the today's international installed power station plant capacity.…”
