Water–Energy Nexus in Typical Industrial Water Circuits

Abstract: Water–energy nexus has been recognized as an important and challenging issue, namely in industry. This is due to industry reforms, increasing demand, and climate change. This concept focuses on the link between energy and water infrastructure. Overall, there is limited understanding of the nature of this link, as it is assumed that water is not a threat to the energy sector or an influence of the electricity to the water resources. This work aims to present and evaluate case studies related to typical industri… Show more

“…The Modelica language is used for the modelling of the equipment and simulation of the overall operation of the plant. Although Two open source Modelica libraries have been identified for this prospect: ThermoPower [12] and Soltermica [14]. Table 2 presents a general description of each library and the component models which these libraries provide in the scope of this research.…”

“…Numerical modelling may be applied in a multiscale perspective in order to either develop models for single unit operations in a plant or a building or the whole system which encompasses a set of processes. The Modelica language has been used to develop models and study the implementation of several types of measures [12][13][14][15]. Several open source libraries have been developed in Modelica for the simulation of several systems.…”

“…With respect to managing the WEL Nexus, the EU is confronted with diverse conflicts of interests and unintended interrelations. Two prominent examples are the nitrogen pollution of ground water by agriculture [74] and the link between energy and water infrastructures in industry [75]. The EU emphasizes that internal policies affecting sustainable consumption and production patterns in the EU are important to help prevent resource scarcities [13].…”

“…The study of energy efficiency has been the scope of the majority of international energy and environmental policies, namely the most recent European 2030 climate and energy framework (European Commission, 2014), European Green Deal (European Commission, 2019), European 2050 long-term strategy (European Commission, 2018) and the Paris Agreement (Horowitz, 2016). The interdependencies of water and energy resources, which includes the understanding of the improvement of water use through the understanding of the use of energy, have been studied on the scope of the water-energy nexus (Oliveira et al, 2019).…”
