Water/Ethanol Selectivity of New Organic‐Inorganic Hybrid Membranes Fabricated from Poly(vinyl alcohol) and an Oligosilane

Abstract: To control the swelling of PVA membranes, mixtures of PVA and an inorganic oligosilane were prepared using sol‐gel reactions to yield new PVA/oligosilane hybrid membranes. In the separation of an ethanol/water azeotropic mixture during pervaporation, the effect of the oligosilane content on the water/ethanol selectivity of PVA/oligosilane hybrid membranes was investigated. The water/ethanol selectivity of PVA/oligosilane hybrid membranes was higher than that of PVA membranes, but the water/ethanol selectivity … Show more

“…EtOH solutions are being investigated as new energy sources. This investigation is in line with the effort to alleviate problems associated with limited petroleum resources [1]. IPA is a clean energy source, and it is one of the important solvents used in large scale in industries, particularly pharmaceutical industries.…”

“…8,9 Furthermore, in order to control the swelling of poly (vinyl alcohol) membranes, mixtures of poly (vinyl alcohol) and an inorganic oligosilane (Compoceran 1000 from Arakawa Chemical Industry Co. Ltd.) a tetramer of dimethoxysiloxane having terminal epoxy propane groups were prepared using sol-gel reactions to yield the hybrid membranes. 10 The silica-poly (vinyl alcohol) hybrid membrane was also prepared using γ-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane as initial precursor for silica. γ-Glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane has an organically modified alkoxide moiety containing a reactive epoxy ring which strengthens interaction between organic and inorganic phases, producing membrane of larger free volume with suitable pore sizes (free volume cavities) and increased the pore number density; and such membranes were tested for application in separation of benzene-cyclohexane mixture via pervaporation.…”

“…So far, two different fabrication methods for hybrid membranes have been proposed: (i) in situ formation of inorganic particles within polymer matrix through sol-gel method [24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. In this method, nano-size inorganic particles can be linked to polymer matrix through covalent bonds to achieve homogeneous hybridization.…”
