The exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in sedimentary basins such as the Llanos Basin of Colombia, have enabled the acquisition of large volumes of surface and subsurface data, for assessing the geothermal potential of deep aquifers. The integrated analysis of geothermal play elements such as temperature, reservoir - fluid properties, and their depth in the basin, with the available hydrogeological-chemical data, allow us to define three regional plays as follows: Play A, characterized by naturally fractured reservoirs, in crystalline basement rocks - Paleozoic, with temperatures above 150 ºC, semi-confined aquifers; b) Play B, composed by Mesozoic quartz sandstone reservoirs, with primary porosity greater than 10%, temperatures between 75 ºC to 150 ºC, semi-confined aquifers, near to high hydraulic head zones with 500 m difference ranges in the regional piezometric surface; c) Play C, composed by Mesozoic quartz sandstones, high primary porosity, temperatures below 100 ºC, confined aquifers. Available well and Oil and Gas production data suggests that Play A is speculative, Play B is hypothetical, and Play C is known.

El presente estudio se centra sobre la región del abultamiento periférico (forebulge), en el cual se intenta explicar cuáles fueron los eventos que permitieron la posibilidad de recibir y preservar sedimentos, como así también la generación de trampas estratigráficas durante el lapso transcurrido entre el Eoceno y el Oligoceno en la cuenca de los Llanos Orientales de Colombia. Se destacan los aspectos vinculados con los niveles productivos en la región suroriental de la Cuenca de Llanos, postulando una subdivisión del reservorio principal (Areniscas Basales) en dos unidades, depositadas bajo disimiles estadios tectónicos en el transcurso de la evolución de la cuenca de antepaís. Para ellos se empleó 13.930 kilómetros de líneas sísmicas 2D y 71 pozos exploratorios. Se describen y analizan los elementos y mecanismos que coexistirían como factores esenciales de las acumulaciones de petróleo pesado, definiendo diferentes estilos de entrampamiento combinados y vislumbrando la presencia de un gran potencial remanente para estos plays someros.

In this chapter, we summarize for the first time the structural geometry and evolution of the Eastern Foothills of Colombia based on new and previously published cross-sections. We compare shortening records of the Caguán-Putumayo and Llanos Foothills as two different end-members for thick-and thin-skinned foothill deformation along the Andean deformation front. The Caguán-Putumayo area involves thick-skinned deformation and broad basement uplifts, such as the Garzón Massif, with a simple frontal monoclinal structure expressed in folded and faulted basement rocks, similar to broad thrust-related uplifts in the eastern Rocky Mountains of North America. In contrast, the Llanos Foothills have a more complex array of structural styles, from tightly folded frontal basement structures to thin-skinned antiforms of faulted detachment folds. The main factor controlling the style of basement deformation appears to be basement composition, which is igneous/metamorphic crystalline in the Caguán-Putumayo area and low-grade metasedimentary in the Llanos Foothills, prompting tighter basement folds. The main factors in determining thin-versus thick-skinned deformation appear to be the thickness of the Mesozoic -Cenozoic stratigraphic units and the presence or absence of detachment horizons. The Andean Foothills of Colombia record a geometric evolution that started in the Oligocene, with similar structural styles across all segments at that time. However, the deformation styles diverged rapidly during the Miocene to recent shortening, where rapid deposition of thick fluvial sedimentary units drove source rocks into the oil window and helped form efficient detachment horizons for thin-skinned deformation in deeper sectors of the basin.
