Water-Food Nexus in Citarum Watershed, Indonesia

Abstract: Abstract. The water-food nexus is promoted as an approach to look at the linkages between water and food. The articles of Water's Special Issue "Water-Energy-Food Nexus in Large Asian River Basins" look at the applicability of the nexus approach in different regions and rivers basins in Asia. Citarum River was selected for the case of Indonesia study site of RIHN Waterfood Nexus Project with a focus on the Juanda/Jatiluhur dam as the downstream of the three large cascaded reservoirs and river estuary at the Ja… Show more

“…Firstly, higher population growth will increase the need for land for settlements and industries. This will lead to a conversion of land use from agricultural land to other uses [87,88]. As a result, agricultural land will be exploited beyond its carrying capacity, and agricultural practices are not environmentally friendly [66,79,89], causing land degradation, erosion, sedimentation, and reducing water resources [46,79,87].…”

“…The river's length is around 300 km, and its basin covers 5960 km 2 [2], [3]. During the last 30 years, the Upper Citarum Basin has experienced rapid development, which has led to an increase in water extraction and land conversion from green or conservation areas to open or developed ones [4]- [6]. This affected the run-off production from that basin during periods of rainfall.…”

“…In this context, the WF Nexus arises from an approach that promotes natural resource management’s interconnection and the importance of guaranteeing universal rights to these resources [ 8 ]. Therefore, new methods are designed for scenario predictions such as adaptation and mitigation simulating water and food security proposals for good governance [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…The WF Nexus is a complex concept often used in the comprehensive study and management of global resource (water and food) systems [ 10 , 33 ]. The complexity of the nexus promoted several models to understand its scope better [ 22 , 34 ].…”
