Water–Food Nexus through the Lens of Virtual Water Flows: The Case of India

Abstract: For a water-secure present and future, there is a need for a transition from water scarcity towards water security. This transition necessitates a look at the complex relationships, and interdependencies, between water and other resources, and the institutions governing them. Nexus approach encompasses these interdependencies. This paper focused on the water–food nexus through the lens of the virtual water (VW) flows concept with the aim to explore the role of the VW flows concept in governing the transition t… Show more

“…This study evaluates the spatio-temporal characteristics of agriculture and non-agriculture (domestic) interstate trade networks across India over the period 2010 to 2018 using a complex network approach. The key contributions of the study going beyond the previous studies [2,19,22,[63][64][65][66][67] by exploring the underlying characteristics and nuances of DITN. The spatio-temporal change of the agriculture versus non-agriculture trade provides crucial insights into changing nature of the commodities based on their class for authorities and policymakers to manage interstate trading.…”

“…This study evaluates the evolutionary characteristics of agriculture and non-agriculture Domestic Interstate Trade Network from 2010 to 2018 through a complex network approach. The key contributions of the study going beyond the previous studies [51,52,22,19,53,54,2,55] are to explore the dynamics and nuances of DITN and the spatio-temporal evolution of the agriculture versus non-agriculture trade that provides crucial insights for authorities and policymakers to manage the interstate trading.…”

“…Water is a fundamental resource for ecological and economic imperatives across the globe, contributing to the sustenance of livelihoods, food production and energy generation [1]. Despite its importance, water resources are increasingly under threat due to overexploitation [2], pollution [3], scarcity [4], depletion [5] and issues of accessibility/affordability [6]. In addition to these threats, competitive water uses and strong interdependencies across different productive sectors (e.g., water-energy-food nexus) challenge the way water resources have traditionally been managed [7,8].…”
