Water-induced Acceleration of Transport Properties in Hydrophobic 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Hexafluorophosphate Ionic Liquid

Abstract: The electric conductivities and self-diffusion coefficients in dried and water-saturated 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [BMIM][PF6], were measured at 25 and 40 °C. Although the presence of water can remarkably induce acceleration of transport properties in the ionic liquid, the ionic dissociation remains almost unchanged.

“…It has been shown [14,15] that small amounts of water in fluorinated ILs, such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate and tetrafluoroborate, have a dramatic effect on the rate of diffusion of neutral and ionic species in these media. It was thus proposed that "wet" ILs may not be regarded as homogeneous solvents but have hydrogen-bond interactions that can possess in some cases polar and non-polar regions [16].…”

“…The role of water in ionic liquids is complex and depends on the supramolecular structures of ionic liquids. [15][16][17] Measurements of the solvation responses and microscopic solvent properties have resulted in the accumulation of a sizable database on solvation dynamics in ionic liquids. “…The dissociation of ILs also have a profound impact on toxicity, 11 their use in chemical reactions, 12 and applications as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). 13−15 Many experimental efforts (e.g., using NMR, 16,17 dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS), 18,19 and conductivity measurements 20 ) have been devoted to investigating the extent of dissociation (α) of ILs. In the dilute solution limit, ILs tend to fully dissociate.…”
