Water-insoluble polymer-free uniform nanofibers of peracetylated cyclodextrin by electrospinning

Abstract: Hydrophobic cyclodextrin (CD) nanofibers were produced by the electrospinning of peracetylated b-CD without requiring any polymer as a carrier matrix. Native b-CD was peracetylated through the reaction with acetic anhydride, and the conversion of all hydroxyl groups into acetyl was confirmed by NMR, XPS, and TGA analyses. The peracetyl modification drastically boosted the thermal stability of the b-CD molecules. The electrospinning of the peracetylated b-CD from its highly concentrated solutions (180% (w/v)) i… Show more

“…Viscous rope coiling set the relevance of the internal frictional force of solutions (viscosity) for stable jet formation, which narrows the solution properties for EHD processing, but also opens the possibility of aqueous processing beyond polymeric systems. [72,73] Several studies report the EHD processing of non-polymer systems, however, polymers are needed to improve jet stability. [74][75][76] In 2014, Huang et al studied the control of dimension and deposition of EHD structures by varying environmental conditions (Figure 3a).…”

“…When the distance increases from 10 to 25 cm, the average diameter of cyclodextrin nanofibers does not change significantly (decrease from 1070 to 1050 nm), and the morphology remains bead‐free and smooth. [ 82 ] The fiber diameter remains relatively unchanged with distance at all weight ratios of whey protein isolate and pullulan. [ 79 ]…”
