“…CECs are a heterogeneous set of pollutants that includes pharmaceuticals, personal care products, insecticides, flame retardants, industrial additives, surfactants, plasticizers, and nanomaterials [6][7][8] Based on the current global research trends on CECs, the CECs discussed in this study can be classified as follows: POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants), antibiotics, EDCs (Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals), and microplastics. With the wide application of chemicals in industry, agriculture, etc., the introduction of CECs into the environment is inevitable.…”

“…Even though these contaminants are usually found at low concentrations in aquatic environments, they may produce adverse short-and long-term effects over time [19]. The effects of complex mixtures of CECs on organisms are often subtle, sublethal, and indirect [38].…”

“…Globally, poor water quality is largely determined by the level of aquatic pollution and is of great concern to public health and well-being [19]. Numerous studies have reported endocrine disruptors, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, and personal care products in surface or drinking water sources [20][21][22][23][24][25].…”

“…Throughout the last decade, several chemical contaminants (i.e., anthropogenic source), often labelled as Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), such as perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), alkylphenols, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides, carcinogenic metals (Cd, Ni, Cr, and As), present in water have come to the attention of authorities in terms of environmental and human health risk. Uncertainties over the occurrence, origin, and hazard of CECs and the large number of all kinds of emerging pollutants have prompted authorities to take measures and impose a set of priorities concerning the maximum accepted concentrations for these environmental contaminants [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. Discovering the sources, and understanding the interactions and effects of water pollutants is essential for monitoring contaminants in a safe environment, and in an economically acceptable manner.…”
