Water Quality Assessment and Monitoring of Closed Rearing System of the Sea Cucumber Holothuria scabra

Abstract: Sea cucumbers are an essential fishery resource. Therefore, effective aquaculture methods should be developed to achieve their optimal production. Sea cucumbers are susceptible to various environmental factors, one of which is water quality. Monitoring water quality based on physical and chemical parameters should be useful to the rearing system in aquaculture. In practical use, farmers usually monitor only temperature, salinity, and pH, neglecting the essential role of chemical parameters. This review focuses… Show more

“…Ideal aquatic environmental conditions can support the sandfish H. scabra's growth. This result can also indicate water quality parameters in the habitat for living of sandfish sea cucumbers is within the optimal range (Manuputty, 2019;Meirinawati et al 2020). The water quality parameters measured in this study are supporting data to describe the condition of the waters when the sandfish H. scabra was found (Table 4).…”

“…Sandfish sea cucumber can live at a pH with optimal conditions in the range of 7.5-8.5. However, if the pH is above 9 or below 6, the growth of sandfish H. scabra will be disrupted (Meirinawati et al 2020).…”

“…Based on the results of water quality measurements during maintenance, it can be maintained at an optimum level for the growth of juvenile sea cucumbers. This range of water quality parameters corresponds to the optimum environmental conditions reported from existing research results [21].…”

“…The natural environment directly or indirectly controls the presence and abundance of macrobenthos (Schückel et al, 2015;Foulqquier et al, 2020), such as sea cucumber. Water quality (Meirinawati et al, 2020) and water movements through the transport of sediment and organic material, also strongly affect this bottom community (Koumianaki et al, 2013). Tanita and Yamada (2019) stated that environmental characteristics, both physical and chemical parameters, greatly affected the species composition, population, and distribution of sea cucumbers in their ecosystem.…”
