Water quality assessment at Ömerli Dam using remote sensing techniques

Abstract: Water quality at Omerli Dam, which is a vital potable water resource of Istanbul City, Turkey was assessed using the first four bands of Landsat 7-ETM satellite data, acquired in May 2001 and water quality parameters, such as chlorophyll-a, suspended solid matter, secchi disk and total phosphate measured at several measurement stations at Omerli Dam during satellite image acquisition time and archived at the Marine Pollution and Ecotoxicology laboratory of the Marmara Research Center, where this study was carr… Show more

“…In this study, statistical techniques were also applied to find the most significant relationships between water quality parameters and reflectance values of visible band of TM and OLI data and their combinations [10][11][12][13][14][15]. Pearson's correlation was carried out between Landsat bands, and chlorophyll and turbidity concentrations to find the most significant relationships.…”

“…TP is closely related to Chl-a concentration, and total suspended matter usually acts as a carrier for TP loading, thus, TP is also closely related to secchi disk with an exponential equation [25]. Remote estimation of total phosphorus (TP) and total phosphate has been investigated based on their high correlation with optically active constituents [10,25,28]. Although there is a possibility that TP may be indirectly correlated to remote sensing measurements, few studies have been conducted to estimate TP concentration using remotely sensed imagery and can be quantified using visual spectral bands.…”

“…Remote sensing is the proven technology which can be visualized spatially and temporally and related methods can be used in establishing various water quality parameters was widely studied. [3][4][5][6][7][8]. Remote sensing has the ability to comprehend the changes in the past, estimate present impacts and gauge the future for effectual planning.…”

“…The establishment of relations between in-situ ground truth and earth observation data is usually based on three approaches (Duan and Bastiaanssen, 2015;Giardino et al 2007, Chen et al 2008, Alparslan et al, 2007, Hellweger et al, 2007, Tyler et al, 2006, Han et al, 2005, Vincent et al, 2004Young et al, 2011): -empirical algorithms, which is based on the creation of a regression models using satellite imagery and water quality parameters, -semi-empirical approach, which embodies the use of spectral water quality characteristics in the statistical analysis, -analytical approach, in which key water quality parameters are related to inherent optical properties and therefore to apparent optical properties and top-of-atmosphere radiance.…”
