A field experiment was carried out at Solapur, Maharashtra during 2015-2017 on 4 and 5 year old plants of pomegranate having treatments composing of 4 organic mulches (i.e.No mulch, wheat straw, sugarcane baggas and safflower straw) and 5 different irrigation levels (i.e. 0.30 to 0.80 * ETr) through drip irrigation under split plot design. Amount of applied irrigation water for different treatments varied from 2597 to 9218 Liters per season per tree. The results indicated that organic mulches and irrigation level had significant effect on leaf area index, nos. of fruits, yield and water use efficiency. The highest water use efficiency was estimated with sugarcane baggas while the lowest WUE was estimated in no mulch.The mean maximum plant height, number of fruits, weight, growth, LAI,yield and WUE was evaluated at 0.50*ETr and 0.60*ETr irrigation level and sugarcane baggas mulch is the best for 4 and 5 old age pomegranate tree.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L) cultivation today is a highly lucrative and remunerative agriculture business in India. The alluring monetary return per unit area from this crop has resulted in steady increase in area, production and export of pomegranate during last two decades. It is one of the oldest known edible fruits and is capable of growing in different agro-climatic conditions ranging from the tropical to temperate region. India occupies first position in pomegranate area and production globally [8]. Maharashtra State is a leading state for production of pomegranate and contributes more than 70% of its total production in India. The study was carried out to estimate reference crop evapotranspiration, develop crop coefficients, area factors and estimate crop evapotranspiration of pomegranate for western part of Maharshtra, India. The crop coefficient values were estimated for pomegranate plantation of 1 st year to maturity (5 th year) on weekly basis from the concept of shaded area approach that is widely used for the deciduous crops. Pomegranate crop evapotranspiration was then determined on weekly basis for this region for 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th years of pomegranate orchards for Ambia, Mrig and Hast Bahars. The values of water to be applied to pomegranate plantation spaced at 3 x 4.5 m and irrigated by the drip irrigation system of 90% efficiency were estimated. These values would be useful for the appropriate irrigation water management of pomegranate orchards.

This paper provides an overview of the research carried out over the last 25 years on the FAO56 single and basal crop coefficients of subtropical and tropical orchards and plantations of cactus pear, dragon fruit, fig, jujube, passion fruit, pomegranate, cape gooseberry, cherimoya, guava, longan, lychee, mango, papaya, acerola, carambola, cashew, cacao, coffee, jaboticaba, jatropha, macadamia, açai palm, coconut, date palm, guayule, oil palm, peach palm, ramie and rubber tree. The main objective of this review is to update standard single crop coefficients (Kc) and basal crop coefficients (Kcb) and complete the Kc and Kcb values tabulated in FAO56. Kc is the ratio between the non-stressed crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and the grass reference evapotranspiration (ETo), and Kcb is the ratio between the crop transpiration (Tc) and the ETo. When selecting and analysing the literature, only studies that used the FAO Penman–Monteith equation, or another equation well related to the former to compute ETo were considered, while ETc or Tc were obtained from accurate field measurements on crops under pristine (non-stress cropping conditions) or eustress (“good stress”) conditions. Articles meeting these conditions were selected to provide data for updating Kc and Kcb under standard conditions. The related description of orchards and plantations refers to crop cultivar and rootstock, irrigation systems and scheduling, planting spacing, fraction of ground cover (fc) by the crops, crop height (h), crop age and training systems, as Kc and Kcb values depend on these characteristics. To define the standard Kc and Kcb values of the selected crops, the values collected in the literature were compared with previously tabulated standard Kc and Kcb values. The updated tabulated values are transferable to other locations and climates and can be used to calculate and model crop water requirements, primarily for irrigation planning and scheduling, and thereby supporting of improved water use and savings, which is the overall aim of the current review.
