Water resource recovery by means of microalgae cultivation in outdoor photobioreactors using the effluent from an anaerobic membrane bioreactor fed with pre-treated sewage

Abstract: With the aim of assessing the potential of microalgae cultivation for water resource recovery (WRR), the performance of three 0.55m(3) flat-plate photobioreactors (PBRs) was evaluated in terms of nutrient removal rate (NRR) and biomass production. The PBRs were operated outdoor (at ambient temperature and light intensity) using as growth media the nutrient-rich effluent from an AnMBR fed with pre-treated sewage. Solar irradiance was the most determining factor affecting NRR. Biomass productivity was significan… Show more

“…The high rP in the CO 2 +P reactor could simply be explained by the larger availability of P. [34][35][36][37][38] Figure 6 summarizes the mixed model results of TSS, rNH 4 , rNO 3 , rNO 2 and rTSS, as well as Table 3. The results confirmed, as in Figs 5 and 6, that limited variations of the HRT value (±20%) did not significantly affect biomass production or N removal rate, in agreement with Viruela et al 39 In the tested conditions, only the addition of CO 2 had a positive effect on rTSS and rNH 4 . The addition of P, at the applied rate, did not provide any further, significant benefit.…”

“…As a bioremediation technique, microalgae was cultivated in a Membrane PhotoBioReactor pilot plant (MPBR) in order to remove nutrients from the effluent of an AnMBR pilot plant, as 5 previously described by Viruela et al [7]. This microalgal biomass, mainly composed of Scenedesmus spp.…”

“…This microalgal biomass, mainly composed of Scenedesmus spp. [7], was concentrated by filtration before being fed to two laboratory-scale reactors, a mesophilic AnMBR and a thermophilic CSTR, according to the OLR described for each reactor in the next sections. Scenedesmus biomass was concentrated by filtration using an external cross-flow, ultrafiltration hollow fibre membrane system (HF 5.0-43-PM500, PURON ® Koch Membrane Systems), which has a surface area of 2.1 m 2 and a nominal pore size of 500 kDa MWCO (Molecular Weight Cut-Off).…”
