Water sanitation, hygiene and the prevalence of diarrhea in the rural areas of the delta region of Myanmar

Abstract: Myanmar is an agriculture-based country with 70% of the total population residing in rural areas. Around half of the total population in Myanmar has to consume water from unimproved sources. The prevalence of diarrhea due to contaminated drinking water is high even in urban areas. The urban community may expect the provision of municipal water supply in the near future if the current revolution in the country succeeds. However, the rural areas have lesser or no chance to get quality water because of a lot of o… Show more

“…Boiling water to a boil can kill some diarrhea-causing pathogens such as Shigella flexneri (Moyo et al, 2022). People tend to only know the importance of safe drinking water management but ignore personal hygiene when using the water (Ko and Sakai, 2022). According to (Mcclelland et al, 2022), storing drinking water in separate special containers and separating drinking water from other water supplies can reduce the risk of diarrhea.…”

“…7 A significant proportion of diarrheal disease can be prevented through safe drinking and adequate water sanitation and hygiene (WASH). 8,9 Copious studies from low-income and middle-income populations throughout the world have reported that indicators of household-level WASH are significant predictors of linear growth of children after adjusting for a wide array of other covariates including birth weight, gestational age at birth, maternal height, maternal education, and household wealth. 10 However, a wide range of studies indicated that HWTS can improve drinking water quality prior to consumption and it has been found as a cost-effective method that can reduce the risk of diarrhea significantly.…”
