Water-Soluble Constituents of Coriander.

Abstract: From the water-soluble portion of the methanol extract of coriander (fruit of Coriandrum sativum L.), which has been used as a spice and medicine since antiquity, 33 compounds, including two new monoterpenoids, four new monoterpenoid glycosides, two new monoterpenoid glucoside sulfates and two new aromatic compound glycosides were obtained. Their structures, were clarified by spectral investigation.

“…The molecular formula of compound 1 was established as C 14 Enzymatic hydrolysis of 1 gave glucose and an aglycone, which was identified as (1 0 S)-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethane-1 0 ,2 0 -diol [22] from spectroscopic evidence ( 1 H NMR, MS, specific optical rotation). The location of the glucosyl moiety was assigned to be the C-2 0 hydroxy group from the HMBC correlation of the anomeric proton with C-2 0 .…”

“…The EtOAc-soluble fraction (24 g) was subjected to a silica gel column and eluted with solvents of increasing polarity (n-hexane-EtOAc-MeOH) to give 27 fractions. , which was identified as (1 0 S)-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethane-1 0 , 2 0 -diol [22], together with sugar. The sugar was identified as glucose by TLC analysis [R f : 0.33, n-BuOH/pyridine/…”

“…Both aqueous and ethanolic extracts of P. oleracea showed gastroprotective action, validating its use in folk medicine for gastrointestinal diseases; both extracts showed a dose-dependent reduction in the severity of ulcers (98). From the water-soluble fraction of a methanolic extract of coriander (the fruit of Coriandrum sativum), which has been used as a spice and medicine since antiquity, four new monoterpenoid glycosides, 111-114, a hemiterpenoid, 6, and two rare new monoterpenoid glucoside sulfates, 115 and 116, were identified (99). An unusual monoterpene glycoside named dissectol A 117 was isolated from the ethanolic extract of Incarvillea dissectifoliola (100,101).…”
