Water‐soluble omega‐3: A concept for purification of fish oil and nutraceuticals?

Abstract: There is a need for improved processes for preparation of omega-3 PUFA formulations having a high content of PUFA, low levels of persistent environmental pollutants (EPs), acceptable oxidation stability and if possible, can be formulated as a powder. Using N-methyl glucamine (meglumine), which forms water-soluble omega-3 salts, an extraction process was developed that for the first time removed the EPs present in the starting material (commercially available cod liver oil added fish oil, CLO-FO). GC/high-resol… Show more

“…There was a significant difference between the recoveries of ALA, LA, and OA from the FFAs extracted from the desilked silkworm pupae oil, which indicates that the β‐CD inclusion exhibited a selective enrichment ability for the purification of three PUFAs. Because β‐CD consists of crystalline, nonhygroscopic, cyclic oligosaccharides with a relatively lipophilic interior and a hydrophilic exterior, the role of β‐CD may be to form inclusion complexes with the PUFA tails within the internal cavity of the β‐CD molecular .…”

“…In the present issue of EJLST, Borhaug and coworkers proposed a process to prepare water soluble n-3 LC-PUFA concentrate from cod-liver oil [17]. Water soluble n-3 LC-PUFA ingredients are not commercially available and therefore the aim of the study published by Borhaug and coworkers is per se very innovative.…”
