Water Use in the Tourism Accommodation Sector

Abstract

Water use is water that is withdrawn from its source for a specific purpose (agriculture, industry, etc.). Water demands by the tourism accommodation sector are usually classified in the wider category of domestic water use. Whereas the term water consumption is defined as the portion of water use that is not returned to the original source after being withdrawn, in studies addressing domestic water, "use," and "consumption" are often used interchangeably. Tourism accommodation sector is part of the hospitality industry, which specializes in offering lodging (e.g., hotels, youth hostels, campsites, motels) to travelers.
