Water Vapor Permeability of Poly(L‐lactide)/Poly(D‐lactide) Stereocomplexes

Abstract: PLLA/PDLA blend films with only stereocomplex crystallites as a crystalline species together with pure PLLA and PDLA films with only homo‐crystallites as a crystalline species were prepared, and the effects of enantiomeric polymer blending, crystalline species, and crystallinity on the water vapor permeability were investigated. The WVT coefficient P of PLLA/PDLA blend films was 14–23% lower than that of pure PLLA and PDLA films in the crystallinity Xc range of 0–30%. Amorphous PLLA/PDLA blend films have a muc… Show more

“…But, complete sc‐PLA crystallites without any hc‐PLA could be formed by pouring PLLA/PDLA mixing solution into a nonsolvent (methanol) under strong stirring. From this we may certainly infer that external force may work on the formation of sc‐PLA …”

“…For PLA, it is known that the barrier properties are lower than those of PHBV. 1,9,10 Tsuji and Tsuruno 11 stated WVTR of PLA films with a thickness of 25 µm of 98 -224 g m -2 d -1 depending on their ratio of stereocomplexes.…”

“…The stereocomplex polylactic acid (scPLA) 8 , 9 which is a special crystalline arrangement between enantiomeric PLAs 10 , has been an attraction for the researchers and studied extensively 11 . Due to its special crystalline arrangement, scPLA has superior thermal, mechanical and barrier properties than PLA 12 , 13 . Due to the chiral-complexation interaction between PLLA and PDLA chains, the melting point of scPLA is ~50 °C higher than PLLA or PDLA 8 .…”
