Organophosphorus polyurethane ionomers (AEPA-PU) based on aminoethers of ortho-phosphoric acid (AEPA) were obtained and studied as pervaporation membrane materials for separating isopropanol/water mixtures. The regularities of the change in the water vapor permeability of AEPA-PU were also investigated. It has been established that an increase of solute content in the composition of the urethane-forming system and the content of ionogenic groups in AEPA leads to a noticeable increase in the vapor permeability of the resulting film materials. An increase in water vapor permeability values is accompanied by a significant increase in the pervaporation characteristics of AEPU-PU. It was shown that the conditions promoting clustering of phosphate anions cause an increase in the values of the vapor permeability coefficient of AEPA-PU obtained using polyoxypropylene glycol. However, the hydrophobicity of the polypropylene glycol surrounding the clusters makes it difficult for water to move through the polymer matrix. Due to the hydrophilicity of polyoxyethylene glycol, the highest values of water vapor permeability and pervaporation characteristics are achieved for AEPA-PU synthesized using PEG.

Since the early 1950s, the introduction of ionic groups has been recognized as a tool that can change the polymer properties. Thus, ionomers, polymers that contain a small amount of ionic groups along the polymer backbone chains, have received considerable attention from industrial as well as academic arenas. It has been found that ionomers exhibit unique properties and morphology, such as two T g s, high melt viscosity, transport behavior, and SAXS “ionomer” peak. In this article, we set out with a introduction on ionomers, and then move on to multiplet/cluster concepts. Subsequently, the glass transition temperatures of ionomers have been discussed. The next section is devoted to a discussion of physical properties of various ionomers, that is, polyethylene‐based ionomers, polytetrafluoroethylene‐based ionomers, polystyrene‐based ionomers, block ionomers, telechelic ionomers, and star ionomers. In the following section, three different types of plasticization using polar, non‐polar, and amphiphilic plasticizers are discussed. Then, various ionic interactions as a tool for miscibility improvement are described. The last section deals with the applications of ionomers briefly.

International audiencePolyurethanes cover a large range of materials exhibiting various physical and mechanical properties making them useful in different applications such as elastomers or biomaterials, for instance. The introduction of ionic groups in the polyurethane backbone opens the way to new applications where the ionic groups can act as physical crosslinkers that greatly modify the final mechanical and thermal properties of the materials. Furthermore, the hydrophilicity of the chains can be enhanced by the presence of the ionic species, and so the materials can be processed as conventional dispersions even in a polar solvent such as water. As a consequence the applications are numerous; the main commercial outlets are focused on coatings and textiles industries where they can be used as waterproof coatings or substitutes for leather. But these materials can also be used in high-tech industries for shape memory materials, biomedical devices and biocompatible materials. This review summarizes the latest developments of this class of promising materials and provides the reader with the potentialities of these polymers in various areas
