Water washing of axial flow compressors: numerical study on the fate of injected droplets

Abstract: In turbomachinery applications blade fouling represents a main cause of performance degradation. Among the different techniques currently available, online water washing is one of the most effective in removing deposit from the blades. Since this kind of washing is applied when the machine is close to design conditions, injected droplets are strongly accelerated when they reach the rotor blades and the understanding of their interaction with the blades is not straightforward. Moreover, undesirable phenomena li… Show more

“…In the following section we report the main results in terms of erosion damage and water washing efficiency. Since the flow field was analysed in previous publications (i.e., [21,22]), here we just provide the basics findings, just to frame the erosion results in a more clear and complete framework.…”

“…Since there are no standard quantities used to evaluate the washing efficiency of a compressor washing system, in [21][22][23] we introduced some indices that, together with other considerations, can help in the evaluation. Here we present these indices calculated in the new configurations listed in Table 1.…”

“…The mesh is composed of around 26 M tetrahedral cells, clustered in the wall regions to guarantee values of y+ ranging from 20 to 300 (the reader can refer to Ref. [20] for further details). Such range represents the interval of applicability of the standard wall function and guarantees that the near-wall turbulence is correctly solved in the framework of the adopted models.…”

“…[15], we developed an erosion model based on experiments available in the open literature [16,17]. The WDE model was applied to several compressor blade geometries in the past [15,[18][19][20][21]. In all these simulations, the computation of the erosion mechanism was carried out by assuming that the profile did not change due to the erosion itself thus neglecting the variation in the fluid flow due to the profile modification.…”
