Abstract:We consider acoustic wave beams propagating in a smoothly inhomogeneous medium along a given reference ray. It is shown that in the aberration-free approximation, a Gaussian beam diverges with distance (on the average) less than any other beam with the same initial width. This result has been obtained by solving a variational problem that is similar to the well-known quantummechanical problem of seeking the quantum state with minimum uncertainty (coherent state). An example of the beam with minimum divergence … Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
