Wave Induced Motions of a Floating Mega Island

Abstract: Floating mega islands can provide an attractive solution for creating temporal or more permanent space in coastal areas with a high demand for real estate. Also at open sea in the vicinity of wind farms, fish farms or logistical cross points, a floating mega island could be used as a hub, eliminating costly transfers. One of the aspects which needs to be understood is the wave induced motion of such a floating mega island. A piece-wise flexible island has been model tested at MARIN. The motion behavior in mild… Show more

“…Wang et al (2020) provide knowledge about connected modular structures and fluid-structure interaction, considering wind, waves and other forces. Otto et al (2020) provide relevant insight in terms of a model of a floating island that consists of interconnected pontoons, and its behaviour. "Varying global design parameters such as draft, assembly shape, module shape and module size" will be considered in the authors' future work (p. 188).…”

“…When facing these challenges, sea space utilization through the development of coastal floating structures becomes one potential solution. In recent years, a few innovative floating structures, such as floating solar farms [1] and floating cities [2,3], have been developed or proposed. These floating structures can not only supply renewable energy and seafood, but also create infrastructures for human activities on the sea.…”
