Wave scattering processes in a plasma with ion temperature anisotropy

Abstract: The scattering of electromagnetic waves by density fluctuations in a magnetized plasma in the presence of an external pump field is investigated. The pump wave is supposed to decay into a lower-hybrid and an ion-cyclotron wave in a plasma with ion-temperature anisotropy. The cross-section obtained for the scattering of electromagnetic waves by turbulent fluctuations above threshold for the decay processes is found to be comparitively sensitive to the ion temperature anisotropy.

“…The theory of plasma fluctuations in magnetized plasma and the effect of finite amplitude oscillating electric field were discussed by Klimontovich (1982). In Pavlenko (1990), Wilhelmsson (1991) and Pavlenko (2002) on the base of kinetic fluctuations theory, the scattering in nonequilibrium plasma with hybrid pump is studied. Notice must be taken that the fluctuations theory for magnetized plasma with the pump was developed in Pavlenko (1986) and(1992).…”

“…In Wilhelmsson et al (1991a), the scattering of electromagnetic waves by density fluctuations in a magnetized plasma was found to depend significantly upon the presence of parametric decay instabilities driven by a lower-hybrid pump wave. This offers interesting new approaches to plasma diagnostics.…”
