Wavelet estimation for a multidimensional acoustic or elastic earth

Abstract: A new and general wave theoretical wavelet estimation method is derived. Knowing the seismic wavelet is important both for processing seismic data and for modeling the seismic response. To obtain the wavelet, both statistical (e.g., Wiener‐Levinson) and deterministic (matching surface seismic to well‐log data) methods are generally used. In the marine case, a far‐field signature is often obtained with a deep‐towed hydrophone. The statistical methods do not allow obtaining the phase of the wavelet, whereas the … Show more

“…The theory of how dual-sensor data can be used to separate the recorded wavefield into its up-and downgoing parts has been discussed in detail by several authors (e.g., Claerbout, 1976;Fokkema and van den Berg, 1993;Weglein and Secrest, 1990;Amundsen, 1993;Ikelle and Amundsen, 2005). A brief overview of the relevant theory is presented here.…”

“…A significant advantage of these methods is their ability to extract source array patterns. These methods, however, assume that the medium above the recording surface is known and that the wavefield and its normal derivative are measured (Weglein and Secrest, 1990), which is the case only in OBC and dual-sensor towed streamer surveys (Tenghamn et al, 2007). To alleviate the recording of the normal derivative of the wavefield, Osen et al (1998) propose a modification to the method of Weglein and Secrest (1990).…”

“…Wave-theoretical methods of source signature extraction (Weglein and Secrest, 1990;Osen et al, 1998) are more accurate compared to the other existing methods. A significant advantage of these methods is their ability to extract source array patterns.…”
