WC-Co Particles Reinforced Aluminum Matrix by Conventional and Microwave Sintering

Abstract: Metal matrix composites of Al-WC (10, 15 and 20 wt%) were prepared by microwave (without holding) and conventional sintering (held for 1 hour) processes at various temperatures between 650-950 °C. The results indicated that the highest density of conventional and microwave sintering corresponds to 97.4 ± 1.2% and 98.6 ± 0.8 of theoretical density, respectively; The highest bending strength of conventional and microwave sintered samples were 223 ± 12 and 256 ± 12 MPa, respectively. XRD patterns showed the decom… Show more

“…Aluminum (Al)-based metal matrix composites (AMMCs) are an excellent choice for automotive, aerospace, defense, and nuclear power sectors because of their lightweight and favorable mechanical, thermal, and physical properties. Aluminum (Al)-based metal matrix composites are capable of achieving high strength, high-fatigue resistance, high-wear and corrosion resistance, and good compatibility with various manufacturing processes [5][6][7][8].…”

“…Regarding the features of each sintering process, it can be concluded that a change in heating method would change the properties of products as grain size, quality of boundaries, reaction products as a function of local sintering temperature and total sintering time, densification behavior and the bonding of the particles [15, 16, 17].…”

“…Extensive studies have been done on AMCs to improve their mechanical and tribological properties because of their potential in many applications. So far, different ceramic materials such as Al 2 O 3 [ 5 ], SiC [ 6 ], MgO [ 7 ], WC [ 8 ], B 4 C [ 9 ], ZrB2 [ 10 ], SiC-TiC [ 11 ], ZrSiO 4 [ 12 ], TiB 2 [ 13 ], and TiO 2 [ 14 ] have been used as reinforcing agents within an aluminum matrix.…”
