Archimedes, the founder of statics and hydrostatics, in his mathematics and physics studies, created methods related to his inventions of new machines, for example, the method of mechanical theorems based on his lever invention. He also used the principles of decomposition and replication underlying his heat ray invention, and these two principles permeate his work. Analysis of Archimedes’ work shows how he was perhaps the first to use methodically a strategy for solving diverse complex problems. In this article, we use the term Archimedes Code to encompass the way Archimedes approached problems including those two principles. Archimedes was perhaps the first design theorist and the first to think systematically about how to address design challenges. Furthermore, his work demonstrates the fundamental role of engineering practice in advancing science. The new insights regarding the Archimedes Code and its value in design practice may inspire both design researchers and practitioners.

Creating Biomimetic Examples: A Design Method with Scientific Results

Prospective end-users rated aptness, creativity, and innovativeness of biomimetic examples that featured different relationships to create combinations (e.g., used for) between nature and technology. Against common theorizing, similarity was not the most profound for creativity but rather appearance, being part_of, and property_of were. Creativity explained most of the variance in the level of innovation with aptness of the design in a strong supporting role. The focus of conceptualization shifted from ‘creation as new things coming from new ideas’ to ‘innovation as new ideas leading to new things.’ Results are interpreted in the Chinese context of utility. Both in education and industry, the use of 5*5 research grids with rating scales may work as a design method to develop and select functional variants during early design.

Designers are experiencing greater mental demands given the complexity of design tools, necessitating the study of cognitive load in design. Researchers have identified task- and designer-related factors that affect cognitive load; however, these studies primarily use self-reported measures that could be inaccurate and incomplete. Little research has tested the accuracy and completeness of self-reported measures and we aim to explore this gap. Towards this aim, we seek to answer the question: How does cognitive load vary based on the different design representations used, and do these differences depend on the measure of cognitive load? From our results, we see that the design representations vary in the range of cognitive load experienced by designers when using them. Moreover, this role of the range of cognitive load variance was observed given our use of pupil diameter. These findings call for the use of a multi-modal approach for measuring cognitive load with the combined use of subjective (e.g., self-report) and objective measures (e.g., physiological measures), as well as the use of both retrospective (e.g., self-report) and concurrent measures (e.g., physiological measures).
