We Were Gasping for Air

Abstract: Positioned at the interface between historical sociology, anthropology, and social movement studies, We Were Gasping for Air: [Post-]Yugoslav Anti-War Activism and Its Legacy goes beyond the widely exploited paradigms of nationalism and civil society to track the (post-)Yugoslav anti-war protest cycle which unfolded throughout the 1990s. Drawing upon extensive fieldwork in the region, the author argues that (post-)Yugoslav anti-war activism cannot be recovered without appreciating both the inter- and intra-rep… Show more

“…The fact that it is impossible to reabsorb the divergences in eqs. (17) and (18) into a renormalization of Newton's constant (by means of a counter-term proportional to the Einstein-Hilbert term) is not a sign of a pathology. Instead, it is a direct consequence of the need for non-covariant counterterms to restore the symmetry after regularizing with a scheme that breaks general covariance.…”

“…In addition, many organisations are melting into the sea of corruption. Adding to the image problems CSOs already have in many places, particularly those supported by foreign donors that are seen as part of an aid industry insufficiently connected to local constituencies and needs, these developments have made ordinary Yemenis highly sceptical of CS and its potential for peacebuilding 118 .…”

“…NGOs are often accused of neo-colonialism 28 , while CS as a whole is equated with donor-supported organisations that operate 'in a small, confined space' and are 'unable to connect to larger parts of society' 29 . Some reject the concept altogether for promoting a Western agenda 30 . Khalaf (2015) 31 describes these dynamics in the case of Syria, stating that contact with international donors has led to a 'projectisation' of Syrian social movements, making them bureaucratic and fluent in donor lingo, and forcing them to take up donor priorities.…”

“…30 Most explicitly, Bilić rejects CS as a concept to explain activism because of its lack of purchase for the complexity of political and social interactions and its definitional elasticity in addition to its intimate connection to intervention. 31 The ongoing and active intervention exactly around the meaning of "civil society" and the evident resistance to the processes of CS strengthening as a political project call for adopting a critical perspective on the underlying power dynamics. Here, antonio gramsci's perspective is useful because it focuses on CS as a tool of domination.…”
