We will rescue Italy, but we dislike the European Union: Collective narcissism and the COVID-19 threat

Abstract: Collective narcissists are hostile towards outgroup members, especially in response to threats against the ingroup. In the current study ( N = 662; Polish community sample), we examined the associations between collective narcissism and intergroup relations using the agency–communion model of collective narcissism during the initial weeks of the COVID-19 threat in Poland. Assuming the COVID-19 threat is agentic (i.e., related to biological and economic danger), we expected it to be unrelated to collective narc… Show more

“…There is some evidence that collective narcissism (i.e. the inflated belief in the greatness of one’s ingroup, De Zavala et al, 2009 ) predicts the belief and dissemination of conspiracy theories about COVID-19 ( Nowak et al, 2020 ; Sternisko et al, 2020 ; Żemojtel-Piotrowska et al, 2021 ). Sternisko et al (2020) interpreted their finding in ways that people high in collective narcissism are drawn to conspiratorial thinking because the COVID-19 pandemic poses a threat to their social or political identity.…”

“…This behavior may serve to see the world more predictable by avoiding the uncertainty of politics in the country (Stewart et al., 2019). Significant relationships were also observed between the COVID‐19 outbreak and outgroup derogation in different samples (e.g., Van Assche et al., 2020; Żemojtel‐Piotrowska et al., 2021).…”

“…In this process, network actors shifted their orientation from “individual” towards a “collective” in pursuit of a common goal or goal congruence. “Unity under threat” is an effect documented in other social units such as the behavior of individuals to identity threats (Flade et al ., 2019), organizations' response to environmental threats (Chattopadhyay et al ., 2001) or nations' response to a crisis, such as COVID-19 (Zemojtel-Piotrowska et al ., 2021), while this work documents it at a network level. Resource imbalance in the supply chains was the third network formation driving factor, which was caused by disruptions to supply, demand and labor availability.…”
